The surgery department at SVH celebrated its one-year anniversary in December! In 2006, we have done 200 surgeries. We currently have a total of ten surgeons: two gynecology surgeons, two orthopedic surgeons, one cosmetic/plastic surgeon, one oculoplastic surgeon (eye plastic surgery specialist), two podiatry surgeons, and two general surgeons.
As we have progressed in numbers, the surgeons we have on board are doing not only more, but more complex surgeries. We have also acquired and have access to more equipment that helps us do leading edge technology procedures. For example, we have Coblation technology for our ENT surgeons that is a revolutionary approach to procedures such as tonsillectomies, adenoidectomies, and treatments for nasal airway obstruction and snoring. This technology makes the procedures easier, faster, and with better patient outcomes.
Another technology at SVH is the Novasure device for gynecology procedures. It is used primarily for endometrial ablations which is a treatment for the lining of the uterus in women with abnormal menstrual bleeding. In the past the options for women with this problem were limited and often ended up with hysterectomy and a hospital stay. The new procedures with this technology are quick and done on an outpatient basis.
Our orthopedic surgeons are starting to do more procedures here at SVH also, with January bringing our first total knee operation. We also have our second podiatrist coming on staff who will be starting his surgeries here soon.
